Chemical Peels in Franklin Square NY: What to Expect Before, During and After

A peel is a controlled exfoliation, matched to your skin rather than pulled off a shelf.

Most people who ask us about a chemical peel have already tried a drawer full of products. Serums, exfoliating pads, a retinol they quit using because it made their face angry for two weeks. Their skin looks decent in the bathroom mirror at night and tired in the rearview at 8am. That gap between the two is almost always a texture and tone problem, and a peel is one of the most direct ways to fix it.

Here is the honest version of what a peel is, what it does, and what the week after actually looks like.

So what is a chemical peel, really

A chemical peel is a controlled exfoliation. We apply a solution to clean skin, let it sit for a set amount of time, and it loosens the bonds holding dull, damaged surface cells in place. Over the next several days those cells shed, and the fresher skin underneath comes forward smoother and more even.

That is the whole mechanism. No lasers. No needles. No downtime you need to block off a month for.

What changes the outcome is the strength of the solution and how long it stays on your skin, and that is the part we customize during your consultation. A first-timer with sensitive skin and someone who has been getting peels for six years do not get the same appointment.

People hear the word “peel” and picture the version from movies where somebody’s whole face is wrapped in gauze. That is not this. Most of our clients start flaking lightly around day three, similar to the tail end of a sunburn, and cover it easily with sunscreen and a hat.

The peels we offer

We work with a range of depths so we can match the peel to your skin instead of matching your skin to whatever peel is on the shelf.

VI Peel

This is our workhorse for uneven tone and sun damage. It goes a little deeper than a surface exfoliation and it is a strong choice if you have discoloration from years of Long Island summers, or if your skin tone reads blotchy in photos. You will peel visibly with this one, usually days three through six.

Lighter surface peels

Great before an event, great for a first appointment, great if you have never done anything more aggressive than a scrub. Minimal flaking, a nice glow within a day or two, and a good way to find out how your skin behaves before we go deeper next time.

Custom blends

Sometimes the right answer is a specific combination for your skin and your calendar. If you have a wedding in three weeks, we are not going to hand you something that peels for six days.

If you want the full breakdown of each option, our chemical peels page walks through them in detail.

What a peel actually improves

The realistic list, based on what we see in the room:

  • Uneven tone and blotchiness
  • Sun spots and discoloration that built up over years outdoors
  • Rough, grainy texture, especially on the cheeks and forehead
  • Pores that look congested and stretched
  • Fine lines, particularly the fine crepey ones under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Marks left behind after breakouts have healed
  • Overall dullness, that flat look where your skin does not catch light anymore

Notice what is not on that list. A peel is not going to lift sagging skin or replace lost volume. If that is what is bothering you, we would point you toward microneedling or dermal fillers instead, and we will tell you that straight to your face rather than sell you something that will not do the job.

What your appointment looks like

We start with a skin assessment. Sergina looks at your skin under good light, asks what you have used recently, what you are using now, and what is actually bothering you. That conversation decides the peel, not a menu.

Then we cleanse and prep. The solution goes on in layers. You will feel warmth and a tingle, and it builds a little with each layer. Most people describe it as a strong tingle rather than pain. We stay with you the whole time and we watch your skin closely, because knowing when to stop is most of the skill.

The solution goes on in layers, and we watch how your skin responds to each one.

The whole visit runs about 30 to 45 minutes. You walk out looking slightly flushed, like you have had a brisk walk in cold air, and you can drive yourself home.

The days after, honestly

  1. Day one and two. Your skin feels tight. It may look a little darker or more bronzed than usual. This is normal and it is temporary.
  2. Day three through five. The peeling starts, usually around the mouth and chin first, then outward. It comes off in small flakes, not sheets. This is the part that tests people’s willpower.
  3. Day six and seven. You are through it. Skin looks brighter and feels noticeably smoother.

Now the rules, and we mean these:

Do not pick. Do not help it along. Pulling skin that is not ready to come off is how you end up with a mark that lasts longer than the peel did. Let it go on its own.

Skip the gym for 48 hours. Sweat and heat on freshly peeled skin is a bad combination.

Put every active product away. No retinol, no acids, no vitamin C, no scrubs until we clear you. Gentle cleanser, plain moisturizer, that is it.

Sunscreen every single morning, and reapply. The new skin you just uncovered burns fast. Skipping SPF after a peel undoes the reason you got the peel.

How many peels you need

One peel gives you a reset. You will see and feel the difference.

For real change in tone and texture, we typically recommend a series of three to six peels spaced about four weeks apart. Four weeks is not arbitrary, it is roughly how long your skin takes to complete a turnover cycle, so we are working with your skin’s rhythm instead of against it.

After the initial series, a lot of our clients settle into a peel every three to four months to hold what they built. Think of it the way you think about a dental cleaning. Maintenance, not emergency repair.

When a peel is not the right call

We will reschedule you or recommend something else if any of these apply:

  • You are pregnant or nursing
  • You have an active cold sore or an open breakout in the treatment area
  • You recently finished a strong prescription acne medication, in which case we usually wait several months
  • Your skin is currently sunburned or freshly tanned
  • You have a beach trip or an outdoor event in the next week
  • You had wrinkle relaxer treatments or filler within the last one to two weeks

That last one surprises people. We ask you to wait one to two weeks after injectables before any peel, microneedling, or HydraFacial. It is a simple timing rule and it protects the results you already paid for.

Frequently asked questions

Not the way people expect. You will feel warmth and a tingling that builds as the solution sits, and it eases off within a few minutes of the last layer. Deeper peels tingle more. Nobody has ever needed numbing for one of ours.

Give it 24 hours at minimum. After that, mineral makeup is fine, though we would rather you go light while the skin is shedding. Heavy foundation over flaking skin looks worse than the flaking does.

Peels can be done safely on deeper skin tones, but the choice of peel and the strength matter a great deal, and so does the experience of the person applying it. This is exactly what your consultation is for. We would rather start conservatively and build than push too hard on a first visit.

Two weeks out is the sweet spot for a medium peel. That gives you time to finish shedding and land in the glow window. If you only have a few days, tell us and we will do something lighter.

They do different jobs. Peels work on the surface, so tone, dullness, and texture. Microneedling works deeper on firmness and collagen. A lot of our clients alternate between the two across the year, and we will map that out for you rather than making you guess.
